We recently moved to Cathedral City from New Jersey and have been making it a point to try as many local restaurants as possible. China 8 was our latest stop, and overall we had a pleasant experience. The service was friendly and attentive from the moment we arrived. We started with the fried potstickers, which were crispy and enjoyable. The egg drop soup wasn't our favorite, as it included corn, which was a little different from what we're used to, but it was still a nice start to the meal. For our entrées, we had the Chicken with Snow Peas and the Chicken & Broccoli in Garlic Sauce. The snow peas were fresh and crisp, and the chicken was tender. The garlic sauce dish was packed with flavor and definitely had some heat to it—more than we expected—but it was well prepared and made with fresh ingredients. While China 8 hasn't quite replaced our longtime favorite Chinese restaurant back in New Jersey, it was a solid meal and one we enjoyed. We would definitely come back and explore more of the menu, especially now that we know to ask for milder spice levels on some dishes. It's been a few years since we've ordered from China 8, but I remember as being... fine. Not great, not bad. Not so much anymore, as it definitely tips toward the 'bad' end of the scale. We ordered a variety of dishes for delivery the other night: chicken lo mein (we got a container full of soy-saturated spaghetti. If there was chicken in it, I couldn't find it), General Tso's chicken (mostly breading, sticky-sweet), orange beef (relatively speaking, the standout dish here. It was edible), and chicken fried rice (passable, but very little flavor). We also ordered a couple of appetizers: the Peking ravioli were small, with thin wrappers (more like Japanese gyoza, which makes me suspect that's exactly what they were... Frozen gyoza. Not bad, not terrible) and "cream cheese Rangoon" (note that they don't even pretend it's crab flavored. These were perfectly dreadful... The worst I've ever had). Do yourself a favor, give China 8 wide berth. You can probably do better anywhere on Date Palm.

We ordered delivery and the food was excellent. We had the General Tso with fried rice, Kung pow chicken with steamed rice, vegetable egg foo young, and steamed dumplings. The portions were very generous and flavorfully delicious. I highly recommend China 8 if you were in the Southern Palm Springs, Cathedral City, or Northern Indio area. Great value. It’s nice to have really good takeout close to us.

I don’t even know where to begin with the disappointment from tonight’s dinner at China 8. The experience left me nearly speechless. It seems the chef took some serious liberties with traditional dishes, and the results were underwhelming at best. Take the chicken teriyaki, for instance. The photo attached reveals a dish where more than half the ingredients, particularly the onion and the teriyaki sauce, missed the mark entirely. It didn’t taste like teriyaki at all, and I’m still left with an unpleasant onion flavor lingering in my mouth after an hour at home. As for the barbecue pork, the chef also went off-script. It was extremely chewy and far from enjoyable. I had heard that this place was the best Chinese option around, but if this is what they serve, I can’t agree. Additionally, the ambience felt more like a rundown diner than a dining establishment, which added to the overall disappointment. The staff also lacked friendliness and attentiveness; it felt like we were an afterthought rather than valued customers. Overall, my expectations were dashed, and I can confidently say that the food is not worth the money. I won’t be returning to China 8. Save your time and money fo
